Fourth Grade Series: Houghton-Mifflin Mathematics

    Houghton-Mifflin Mathematics is an elementary mathematics program which uses a systematic step-by-
step approach to developing mathematics concepts and skills. The focus on problem solving and
reasoning provides opportunities for students to demonstrate and apply their understanding. The
following is a breakdown of these concepts and skills.

Chapter 1 Place Value and Money
Concepts: Learning place value to hundred millions;
comparing, rounding, and ordering numbers; and counting and comparing coins.

Chapter 2: Addition and Subtraction
Concepts: Learning to add and subtract whole numbers and how to use them in expressions and
equations.

Chapter 3: Relating Multiplication and Division
Concepts: Learning multiplication and division facts and using them in expressions and equations.

Chapter 4: Multiplication of Whole Numbers
Concepts: Multiplication of whole numbers by 1 and 2 digit factors.

Chapter 5: One Digit Divisors
Concepts: Learning division of numbers with up to four digits by 1 digit numbers, and learning
about prime and composite numbers.

Chapter 6: Measurement and Negative Numbers
Concepts: Using customary and metric units of measure, perimeter, temperature, and negative
numbers.

Chapter 7: Fractions and Mixed Numbers
Concepts: Learning about fractions, mixed numbers, and adding and subtracting mixed numbers
with like denominators.

Chapter 8: Decimals
Concepts: Learning to relate fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals; comparing and ordering
decimals; and adding and subtracting decimals.

Chapter 9: Statistics and Probability
Concepts: Learn about graphing; finding mean, median, and mode and range; and using
probability concepts.

Chapter 10: Geometry and Measurement
Concepts: Learn to identify plane and solid figures as well as finding perimeter area, and volume.

Chapter 11: Graphing and Algebra
Concepts: Learning to plot and locate points on a coordinate graph as well as work with integers.

Chapter 12: Two-Digit Divisors
Concepts: Learning to divide whole numbers by two digit numbers as well as estimating quotients.
